Presentation

How open are my political structures to refugee women*?
It is important to talk about racism, sexism, and homophobia in the context of the refugee movement. We try to appear united on the outside, but inside there is a lot that separates us because of different privileges. Some of us are racist, sexist or homophobic without even realising it. This sometimes comes from refugees, sometimes from supporters.
It is important to know your limits when it comes to support. Supporters sometimes spend a lot of energy helping individuals and forget that this cannot be a permanent state and that it is much more important to empower these individuals: “Don’t give me the fish, teach me to fish.“ We reject the concept that the refugee-supporter relationship is one of giving and one of taking. Instead, we want to continue to think about our own concept of cooperation in solidarity.
